It's shady stuff like that that gives lie to the notion that one should always support B&M retailers. Support good B&M retailers, sure, but not crap like that. I probably would've done what you did. Well, I probably would've been more of a dick about it. Upon seeing the slip, I would've, without saying why, instructed the salesperson to fetch his/her manager. Then I would've explained to the manager what just transpired. Finally, I would give the manage the option of giving me the internet price ($380) to make up for this blatant attempt to cheat me, or to void the transaction and leave a bitter taste in my mouth. If s/he chose the latter, I might have asked if they had a computer I could use for a minute.

You did the right thing. Had you agreed to the sale at the original agreed-upon price, the salesman would have no incentive not to try the same bait-and-switch tactic on the next customer. At least he now knows that there is the possibility that he will lose the sale entirely if he tries it again.

I once stopped into a Tourneau to ask about getting the rubber strap on my Blancpain (a line this particular store carried) replaced. Rather than answering my question on the process for getting a replacement strap, the salesman handed me a booklet of third-party alligator and calfskin straps and asked me to look through it. That was the last time I thought about giving any business to Tourneau.

I agree completely with Mr. Chaser's rationale for why you did the right thing and applaud your restraint. It would seem that you, sir, are a gentleman.

oh... and I also get catalogs from them. Lots of catalogs. They usually whine and say that they probably ran out of catalogs. So I just stand there and wait until they get me one.

thay may be the route I end up going--just seems like less hassle than trying to find the "right" B&M store to buy from. Princeton lists that watch as $475...any idea what the discount is? (i'll give 'em call tomorrow, just curious).

Thank you, sir. I guess I was a bit too polite about it as some have suggested, but from what I could see across the room, the manager already didn't look happy, the guy already got the point and whether or not he learns from it probably won't be affected by my decision for or against making a scene with the manager. The only benefit would be that I might get the watch at the internet price. At that point that however, I just didn't want to give them any money.

i dont like tourneau.
the one near my home are full of arrogant ___
i told my story here once, and if i ever get a devious sale like that to me
no matter how much 10 dollars more or 1000 dolllars more
like i did not notice,

i would reverse the purchase as well.

i rather pay a few more dollars at an honest establishment that treats me with respect and dignity like i am at least have some intelligence,

than at an establishment that thinks i am dumb, and a extra charge here or there he won't notice, or he won't be able to do the math,
of course i can do the math you idiots!


one time at a restaurant at downtown disney, the lady outside stopped us and said if you eat here tonite you will get any free appetizer.

so my wife and i went inside to check it out. we ordered two entrees and an appetizer total 40 dollars. appetizer was like 10 dollars. so cool , that is free .

the check comes and it shows the total bill for all items. i asked them to take off the appetizer becaus the lady said it was free.
so the manager comes and says, "no, she is incorrect, we charge for appetizers, but i will do something for you that is BETTER" he states.

he comes back with a 10% discount off the check. what? that is not BETTER?
i told him this is 10%. not a free appetizer.
he then goes on to explain that i got a BETTER deal, that he doesnot do this to just anybody, and tries redirecting the whole issue.

I got fed up by his DISRESPECT for me (disrespect? yes, does he think i dont know math? does he think he can trick me?)
i said firmly , "best thing for you to do was to apologize and give me a free appetizer. go back there and give me a free appetizer DAMMIT!!" in so many words
so he did.
my point is it is not the money , it is-.. cmon,.. if he just said , im sorry she was wrong, and i know we should own up to her mistake, but we cannot give you a free appetizer ,no ifs ands or buts. i m sorry sir.

then that is fine. he respects me. i say no problem . pay the bill and period.

I just read through your entire response and it really put a smile on my face. Your awesome man, I am gald you are a part of this forum. Great example on how to handle a situation like this.

thanks LSeca, but i dont think i handled it ideally like a gentleman.

i was patient with him at first but after he started arguing with me in front of other customers about how he is doing me a favor, i got fed up and got angry.

maybe i should have kept my cool and just be firm. i didnt share that to show others how to act, just my story in sharing what the OP was dealing with inside.

Unfortunately, Tourneau is like any car dealership. Your experience will vary depending on the salesman and the manager you have to deal with. For your situation, you did the right thing. Completely dishonest to quote one price and than try to charge another. Only thing I would have done differently would have been to ask to speak to the manager and inform him of what happened.
