Funny how these guys are considered artisans, but our trying the same is thought of as weirdly obsessive.

I think if your technique and what you can accomplish with the polish is as sophisticated as these guys, then you would be considered an artisan too. This says nothing about being weirdly obssessive or not, although I would venture that artisans tend to be weirdly obssessive people in the first place. Also, I'm not sure their expertise is limited to just giving a shoe a good spit shine. I suspect these guys work more along the lines of glacage artists/colourists because their technique is way too refined to be limited to just shoe shining -- but I could be wrong.
