Tire Recommendations

I am in need of some new tires and am unsure what to get. I am going to go to Costco to get them and I live in Northern California. I pretty much just use my 95 Altima just to go to work and back.

What would you guys recommend I get?

How often should tires be rotated and changed?

I've had good experience with Kumho tires. They're the best bang for the buck IME. I liked them so much I had them in my old BMW 330Ci and got over 36,000 miles on them, for half the price of bigger branded tires. For your car, 4 tires and installation will cost about $250 or so if you buy from Tirerack.com and have them installed locally.

What kind of weather rating should I get? Sometimes I do go into the mountains.

I think my car has Michelins which were $700 total. As for changing tires, you should be able to tell by the tread left. You can always have them re-treaded if you want, of course.

yeah, the tread looks worn to me so that probably means I should have changed them ages ago. I'll try this in a minute http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=51

I personally like Falken Tires a lot. I suggest some ZX series Falken Ziex, good tread life, inexpensive, and moderately grippy. I put a set of four on my mom's Lancer about 2-3 years ago and she still runs them as summer tires, still plenty of good tread on them. Oh and getting tires retreaded is about the worst suggestion I have ever heard. I dont even think it is super legal in most states anymore (cept for 18wheelers)

Think I might just get some Michelin MXV4+ from Costco. Might as well take advantage of my membership. Also, I've never heard of re-treading a passenger tire.

Most passenger tires are not thick enough for retreading. Besides, it'll probably cost you more money to retread.

IIRC, you live in Cali, right? All-Season is probably the most appropriate, it can handle even a bit of snow.

Oh, and I used to suggest getting tires rotated every 6k miles or second oil change.

Passenger tires can be re-treaded. That's how used tires are sold.

I've had success with Falkens, Bridgestones, and Hankooks. Tires are one of the most important purchases for a car, but if you are just looking to get something to keep you on the road, you don't need to overdo it. Figure out what size and type you need and spend some time looking around tirerack.com reading reviews.

After I wake up I'm going to go to Costco and get some Michelins but after those run out I'm definitely going to try some of these Kumhos to see how they compare. tirerack is a good site.

I also have the Ziex 512. Excellent value, good all-around tyre. Also was a Consumer Reports best buy, to top it all off. All-weather btw. Around 75-80 per tyre if I remember correctly...

Yes the 512 are a great tire, I also suggest those. Personally though I run Falken Azenis, but I dont think everyone needs a R compound tire for their daily driver (or in my case my daily driver/weekend racer)
