Matching a dark blue blazer with trousers of an even darker shade of blue?

Thread Starter

Hi,

This is my first post. It’s also the first time I plan on wearing a blazer.

It’s a dark blue, lightly patterened jacket, which (in my opinion) fits me reasonably well. But I am aware of its downsides. Although it’s not a “classical navy blazer,” the typical matching trousers would be khaki (and gray, but I’m not a big fan of the blue-gray combination).

Now, I’ve heard that wearing an odd, blue jacket with blue trousers is generally a bad idea, but I happen to have very dark, “midnight blue” chinos and decided to post that combo here.

Dark blue blazer with midnight blue chinos (left) and khakis (right):

400   400

400   400

In my opinion, the dark blue chinos match the blazer just fine. But does it look like I’m trying to “fake” a suit? What do you fine gentlemen think about this?

while blue on blue is never an ideal matching unless you're talking about a suit, that you are talking about a sportscoat with a pattern and a different shade of blue allows it to work. but remember this, never look like you're trying to create a suit -- that is to say, matching same color pieces. blue blazer and gray trousers are a perfect combination that pretty much goes anywhere ...

The blue/blue combo is not fine - even allowing for differences in texture. This is not just a subjective rule. Ask yourself if the jacket with black trousers would be a good match. Greater contrast is better in an objective aesthetic sense. And fabric is also important in this particular mix if you think the cotton khakis look out of sorts. Light-medium grey or tan trousers (wool, fresco, flannel, whatever) would be better. If you are drawn to the navy over the khaki or grey for fit reasons, get a pair of khaki/tan/stone that you like in fit terms.

The blue trousers do not really work.

OP, this does not work. Wear the khakis or a nice pair of tan wool dress pants or learn to love grey trousers (medium grey vs. charcoal is the key to making this look work IMO).

Fake suit territory.  it would maybe work with ink blue jeans.  If you really wanted blue pants, try a lighter or brighter pair.

Agreed. The only time I think blue on blue works is when the pants are jeans.
