First suit advice please

Hi I am buying my first suit... Well I have an old suit that was bought for me many years ago and is a 42L. I was 20 and didnt know anything. My real size is 40R. Damn the salesman who sold that thing to me.

I got what I thought was a good deal on a J. Crew Ludlow charcoal worsted wool suit last week on Black Friday, about 450 bucks. After reading a little bit on here, it seems that's not a great deal nor is it a very nice suit. I thought it fit reasonably well, but the lapel breaks in the chest which was bothering me. Took it to what I think is a really good tailor today and he said the suit is unbalanced. I thought that the chest was too tight causing the break but he showed me that the problem is really in the neck (it needs to be taken in which then allows the lapel to sit more flat on my chest. I'm guessing my shoulders are wide compared to my neck/traps causing the neck to bunch up?). Then I tried on another suit which I bought a couple of weeks ago and noticed the same problem so I'm returning it after my interview tomorrow (it's not very nice quality either, 300 bucks black Kenneth Cole New York from Macy's).

Here are the options I'm considering:

1. Keep the J crew suit (I really like the quality for the price. Wool feels nice and the tailor was thought it was fairly good quality for the price) By the way, according to the tailor the suit is neither canvassed or half canvassed, it just has a chest piece in case you were curious.

A. Get it completely re-cut with this tailor (for $450) but then I have a suit with what feels like to me nice wool that fits me perfectly. This is my least favorite option because it means I'm spending $900 on a suit... but it will basically be custom fitted

B. Go to my quick and cheap tailor (Korean lady who runs a cleaners next door) and get her to take a little bit out of the neck which she says she does all the time. Don't know if I really trust her and don't want her to ruin the suit.

2. Buy this Benjamin Sartorial suit http://www.ehaberdasher.com/servlet/Detail?no=15433

Best quality I can probably get for the price, canvassed. Only problem here is the pants are 34 whereas I am definitely a 32. I know I can get it tailored but the width at the knees still annoys me. Also, what if I have the same problem with the break in the lapel and bunching up at the neck!? Then I'm back to square one. I guess I can can pay 450 to get it fit perfectly to me...

I am buying this suit for interviews for medical residency but also would like to use it for whatever other life events (weddings, etc.) Don't plan on being much of a suit wearer. One suit is all I need for now, but I want it to be an awesome fitting suit.

Also, grey or blue? I am white, black hair, dark complexion, skin closer to olive (people always think I am Italian). 6 feet tall, 170 lbs. looking for a slimmer fit

Sorry for the long post but any help would greatly appreciated :)

Don't spend much to tailor the J. Crew suit.

It sounds like the color issue has been correctly settled. However, maybe the thing to do is try on a 40x32 suit befoe buying. Although even the legs on size 34 pants could be narrowed.
