I ordered a Nexus 4 from the Play store so I'll have a phone/GPS to use on my Europe trip. Problem is that in the US I have Verizon. Is there any way this phone can or will be able to be used with Verizon when I return, or is it only going to be useful in Europe?

Nope.

The Nexus 4 is unfortunately GSM only and not compatible with the CDMA network Verizon uses.

Just picked up a Nexus 5 and ditched Verizon for T-Mobile. For the 18 hours that I've played with it, I'm not regretting either choice. The phone is great and T-Mobile's LTE speeds are better than Verizon in my area and T-Mobile's plan is 40% of the cost of the Verizon plan.
