Linen sportscoat with peak lapels?

Thread Starter
I need to add several lightweight jackets to my wardrobe, so I've been thinking about having a linen jacket made. I truly like one-button, peak lapel styling and I'm considering this style in cream or tan linen, with side vents, a ticket pocket, and hacking pockets. Since linen is inherently casual, would this styling be too much of a mongrel to look good? Keep in mind that I would select a fabric with enough texture to avoid its being mistaken for a dinner jacket. Of course, a conservative, consistent styling option would be 2-button jacket with notch lapels, patch and flap hip pockets, and patch breast pocket, but why not be adventurous?

Also, what other options are available for lightweight jackets, keeping in mind that I'm not a big fan of seersucker (vertical stripes on tall, thin guys don't look great).

What is the collective wisdom of the forum? I'd like to know your opinions.

Just my $.02--and that's all it's worth: I like the concept except for hacking pockets. Hacking pockets are a feature borrowed from riding jackets, and a cream colored linen jacket just doesn't seem "on" for galloping around the English countryside. I have hacking pockets on my tweed jacket from Chan, and I will get them on the next tweed jacket I plan to commmission in July. However, I don't like them on lighter fabrics.

Perhaps the many gentlemen who are more sartorially sophisticated than I may feel differently, but I kind of doubt it.

I would like to know too, however it seems kind of odd. Does anyone have a finished product for us to look at?

I'd do patch pockets all around. And, lose the ticket pocket.

IMO this is not a good combo. Linen is a light fabric. It's supposed to look relaxed. Linen is a good fabric for drape, etc. Peaked lapels, by contrast, look very sharp to me. It is a strong look. I do not think linen, a relaxed fabric, goes well with the sharp style of peaked lapels. I think it is much better suited for a nice notched lapel.

I say notch too. Just have them put up high and it kinda looks like peaks. Also, patch pockets rock.

A single peak linen suit coat, maybe, for spring/early fall. It is still something of an oddity, but not completely off the mark. I would not do a linen SB peak odd jacket, however. Come to think of it, the only odd jacket I would get SB peak is a stroller.

I see it this way: Peak lapels are more formal. Linen fabric is quite casual. To mix the two would look too forced and just not right. I would do instead a notch lapel two button with patch pockets and no ticket pocket. - JM2C -

I have a navy linen DB jacket (PL) that looks very casual with linen shirt and trousers.

Sorry to hijack but, would a notch lapel, sb, 3 piece be acceptable w/ linen......w/ patch pockets then?

If you do it in a modern cut (with narrow lapels) it might look nice. I think I`ve seen Gucci and other do linen jackets with peaks.

Where is it from? Do you think it looks good?

I had a black linen job with peaked lapels. This was in the late 90s before I knew more.

Looked great in the shop window, but I didn't wear it much. Later it was in a closet that a kitty cat used as a jungle gym...end of coat.
