I think a couple of key points from the article you linked to about the mix and match craze...

1. The author has seen good and bad...but when it's bad it's really bad.

2. It's all about the accessories. Differentiate with ties, bow ties, socks, pocket squares, etc. Like Unbelragazzo said, sticking with white shirts may be best. Most of the pictures in the article seem to work off a white shirt.

It's one thing to mix and match with your groomsmen, but don't forget about coordinating them with the bridesmaids as well. Imagine how it will look in a photo with the ENTIRE bridal party in it. Will it look cohesive? Or just appear as if nicely dressed people were pulled off the street. When you've both agreed on a primary color theme for the wedding perhaps work the outfits around that color and allow for some complementary colors in the accessories.

It should look exactly like nicely dressed people were pulled off the street. Or rather, that nicely dressed people came together for an important and celebratory occasion that wasn't stage managed to the last detail. But, basically like people pulled off the street who are having a great time and happy to be there.

I know we said to drop the relationship and focus on the clothes, but I really wanted to object to this viewpoint. A wedding should be as much our day as hers. It's the most important day (until children are born) in both our lives. And it seems like if anything should be in our purview, it's groomsmen. White shirts, suit color specified, and a set tie motif should do you right. 

 

As far as convincing her of this, I briefly looked for pictures and found none. So mostly I'm voicing my support for your "good fight." Obviously not that big a deal compared to the awesomeness of everything else in the wedding, but you're in the right as far as principle (and taste) is concerned.

Yes, I've been married for twenty years. We didn't do a prenuptial agreement because we had nothing when we married.

  True, if your attitude screws up your marriage, you deserve it.

 

 I've been married for 2.5 years. The wedding was all about trying to appease my mother-in-law. Stuff happens. Weddings are ALWAYS about what the woman wanted. Most guys could care less about the minute details of the wedding. Get over it, or your marriage will be a short one.
