Shirt/Tie Combinations

I have a couple job interviews coming up within the next few weeks and I was wondering what some good looking shirt/tie combinations would be for a charcoal gray suit with a faint white pinstripe.

I am also assuming black shoes with this look, right?

Thanks!

For interviews and a charcoal suit, I like a light blue shirt with a maroon tie.

Hi LittleEnglish,

For interviewing purposes, black shoes are probably your safest bet. You really can't go wrong as you are more likely to be eliminated from consideration for what someone might consider inappopriate, than for not being sufficiently stylish, assuming that you even prefer brown shoes, which a small minority of people here do not.

As for the shirt and tie combination, you can't really go wrong with a white shirt or a light blue shirt. Either a solid tie or a subtle patterned tie would go well here with the basic white or blue dress shirt. I always wear cufflinks to interviews and have never had a problem, though it may be because I wear subtle links. You may want to opt for barrel cuffs though, just to be safe.

These are just a few comments. If you told us more about where you are interviewing, we could offer more detailed insights.

A little more information,

I am currently 19 years old, have a pretty slim build (not that it really matters for this), and am going on interviews for a Co-op Job for Engineering. From what I've heard suits are not common in this type of work atmosphere but I would rather be overdressed than underdressed. I am in college so I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a shirt and tie but I'm willing to spend a little extra to look good.

I also have to buy a nice pair of shoes to go with this outfit so any suggestions of what to look for. Black/Brown? The suit is pretty dark gray so if I went for Brown, the darker the better right?

If you are on a cheap budget and need something quick for a few interviews over the next month. I would head over to payless shoe source and spend $25 on a pair of cheapo shoes. Where them a dozen or so times and throw them away. They look okay when they are new and allows you to spend a bit more on things that are more noticable to most folks (shirt/tie/slacks).

I'm an engineer and I can tell you that engineers don't care what color your shoes are. Just don't look flashy. Black or dark brown shoes, white shirt, patterened tie.

Anyone think no paisley ties can be worn for interviews?

I think a tie with small repeating neat paisleys should be okay, but not a full-figured paisley - too festive/British/casual/outlandish/etc.
