Does Burberry seriously not make their overcoats out of 100% wool? 30% Polyster/13% Nylon seems pretty ridiculous when you're shelling out $2,700 on an overcoat.

It's quaint that you can be surprised by something like that.

If you pay that much, when you can have one tailored for much less, you're just paying for the name and Burberry is not a name I'd pay for.

Haha seeing that was such a shock to me. Maybe it reflects that fact that most of my sartorial knowledge comes from here, and Styleforum is very good at recommending the micros or custom makers who would not compromise on material quality while offering a much more reasonable price. But I still always assumed that the huge brand names produced similar quality just at an inflated price -- not a synthetic material-based product going for $2.7k+.

That was probably the case many years ago.

I'd be interested to hear when it was designers realised they could let the quality slip and sell things (at a much higher margin) on the strength of their name / design if anyone is familiar with that sort of thing.

I had a friend who went to the Armani outlet in Woodbury Commons. Poly/wool blend fused suits were going for $1500. The outlet has been there since I first went there when I was in middle school back in the late 90s...so someone must be buying.

It has been about 10-12 years since this strategy really began to take hold and explode as the only way to fly.

Woodbury is pointless at best. Trying not to denigrate anyone who will wax poetic about it.

Late 90s, worthwhile.
