Moving to Manhattan.. Advice?

Where should a young guy (22). live in the city? Budget is around $1,700 a month for rent. Would prefer to live on my own if possible. Any areas that have a good night life such as bars, clubs, or just places where young people hang out at?

Dunno about prices but it seems all the cool kids are downtown or in Brooklyn.

$1,700 would buy some good space in Astoria. Very quick commute to Manhattan.

$1,700 would be good if you had a roommate, but expect to live above 100th street somewhere. I don't expect you to find a great place downtown in east village. It really depends on what you're looking for though. Just saying, "Where should I live in the city" is such a general term as each and every neighborhood has their own personality and especially budgets.

Astoria would be a great place. Lots of stuff happens there, it's safe, lots of bars (hey you got the beer garden there too), and food is cheaper. Quick commute.

If you really want to move into manhattan, the good rule is that you should be making about 40x your monthly rent. So you should be making $68,000.

I'm saying all of this because you haven't said so much about yourself in your post that it seems like you don't know what you're getting yourself into.

Income would be above $68,000 (not by much though). I'd rather not commute because I assume mostly everyone goes to Manhattan for the nightlife. Plus, I will be working in Manhattan as well. I considered Brooklyn but Im not sure what areas are good, what are bad... I know BK Heights is good but thats just as expensive as Manhattan. Might as well live there then

Where are you moving there from? (Not that it makes much of a difference from an advice standpoint, just curious)

Hoboken area

Has Hoboken recovered from the flooding that Sandy brought? I imagine that is your impetus to move out.
