I'm not sure "nice" figured in as much as the designers recognizing there was a demographic that would pay to stand out (for better or worse). It's the same reason Robert Graham shirts exist.

Hey pdxguy, I live in Portland, too! Square-toed shoes are really awful, though. Chisel is fine, but not my style; I like something rounder.

So, clearly there is a strong anti-square-toe view. When I heard about the club doorman not allowing square-toed shoes in, I wasn't wondering why outdated, horrible 1990's "Kenneth Cole monstrosities" should be included. Therefore, I asume we are all talking about the fact that many of the contributors to this thread hate square-toed anythings, right? Regardless of who makes them? John Lobbs? Prada?

 

Can someone lay down the parameters of what is assumed to be a "square-toed" shoe?...and when did all this fervor kick in? Was it when Cole introduced a bunch of lowgrade pricepoint super square-toed shoes into the scene in the 90's that slayed it for everyone?

BTW...I have worn whatever I feel like (as shoe ignorant as I clearly am) and get into every club I walk up to- anywhere in the world....but maybe that is just the luck of the ignorant....

Square toed monstrosties can easily be traced back to the 1600's England and Europe. The Puritans (aka Pilgrims) wore them in America at that time with giant buckles on the toebox.





I wonder who was responsible for Lincoln wearing these gems?






Apparently the Pilgrim Square toe is being enjoyed even now by the Saudis.




Even if they can be made of high quality materials, they bear no resemblance to the human foot and deserve no place in human history or its future. On the other hand, the square toe may well have been the very inspiration needed to achieve better shapes. We may never know for sure as this is a very sensitive and sometimes traumatic subject among shoe afficiandos.

Man of Lint wins the prize for being clear, civil, and funny. I never knew a simple question would create such a heated conversation. We are not talking about global politics here....just shoes.

 

I appreciate all the feedback. Since I have never had a problem getting into clubs, or dating who I want- regardless of what I am wearing- I never put much thought into the toebox of the shoe. That said, I have learned a fair bit so far, even from the few who may need anger management classes. Thank you all for the conversation.

Hypothesis #2: doorman finds random reason to turn away OP, because club is already filled with orange bimbos and sexually voracious Vampire Squids and OP has not given him $200+ in order to get allowed in to pay too much for bad drinks surrounded by orange bimbos being hit on by Vampire Squids.

This, btw, based on experience of being taken to NY club by Vampire Squids that proved full of orange bimbos. No offence meant to either. Though fonder of the latter, as both hot and female and not continually talking about leverage, albeit domiciled in Jersey.
