Will my fingernail reconnect to the tissue underneath?

I work in a kitchen during the week, after service, while i was scrubbing down the oven, my thumb stubbed on the 'garland' plaque and my thumbnail was pulled up from the skin. The nail was seperated from the skin about 3 or 4 mms past where i cut my nails to (i leave zero white of the nail, i keep them short). I have my nail cut to the point where if it wasnt seperated, there would be no white.

In time, will the nail reconnect unerneath as it grows and i continue to clip it to the point where it would be normally clipped?

My thumbnail looks disgusting and i dont want to clip it all off and leave a really short nail

Ughhhh... I knew I shouldn't have read that. Twists my stomach.

Anyway, yes, as the nail grows out it probably will be fine. If there was any serious damage to the nailbed it could cause your nails to grow strangely - for example, some people will get a longtudinal ridge. But in my experience, it usually ends up being fine.

Hrm, yeah, similar but not exact situation. I lost my nail entirely, but now it looks good as new. The pink ends at about the same place it did before. I let it go for a few weeks after it grew back before clipping it, just to be on the cautious side. No idea if it made any difference or not. I wonder what ever happened to the other guy...

OW.

This thread could have been about getting gutshot and I'd've been fine, but ripped-off nails.... :shiver:

I got my finger wedged in the door of a car once when I was around 6, when i pulled my finger out I had no more fingernail. It grew out though, don't even remember which one it was.

i was building a treehouse when i was a kid, and instead of hitting the nail with the hammer, i hit my pinky. The nail turned completely red and started gushing blood. The next day, it fell off. It grew back normally, but it still freaks me out that i may have a weird looking thumbnail

M@t told my story here for anyone who didn't see it the first time.

The nailbed of my left thumb was damaged twice in my youth. The nail now grows oddly: instead of that nice hemispherical white thingy under the base of my nail, this one has sort of a rectangular whiteness going all the way from the base to the end of the nail. And the nail itself is double-thick in that area. I went to a cosmetic surgeon one time to see if he could fix it, and he told me he'd have to remove the nail and attempt to repair the nailbed, which he couldn't come close to guaranteeing. Oh, and it was going to cost $3500, of which my insurance would cover nothing. My experience with nails leads me to tell you to expect nothing and hope for the best.

DR's advice sounds sound.
Here's my anecdotal contribution for j's reading enjoyment.
Back in the day, I played baseball. I had a bad habit when hitting of letting my grip on one of my hands shift just enough to where a finger was kind of resting on the bat barrel, where the impact of the bat hitting the ball ( an event that, fortunately or unfortunately depending on how one looks at it, happened only sporadically) would essentially shear the nail off the finger.
I did this multiple times. It hurt like shit each time, but always grew back normally.

When I put in lots of miles of running and training for marathons, I often lose a toe nail or two; in whole or in part. As it grows back, it seems to have no difficulty doing what it is supposed to. For partial loses, I tape it down and hope for the best.

Had a toe nail come of once, for a reason i can't remember. But i do remember clipping it. It'll grow back in awhile. Didn't have any problems with that. I think its highly unlikely that it will reconnect.
