I don't think that there is only one group of people that had those traits.
If at that time you where going to settle down in an (in many cases literally) unknown land, you have to have a lot of confidence in your abilities and and a sense(one could say desire) for independence from other people. I think that there are people from all cultures and races that share those traits.
