Because they filmed and did much of the work before they released photos and everybody called it out as stupid?

I inlove.gif you guys and all that, but you make me thankful that I've gotten old and lost enough of my youthful wonder and enthusiasm that I can't really give a shit whether the design of the handle of a particular light saber in a movie that none of us have seen yet is tactically optimal.

Big reveal to me: Will New Order flunkies pronounce "operational" as menacingly as their Empire counterparts?

Hang in there, lawyerdad. In a few years you might be senile enough to enjoy the prequels.

Maybe. Being drunk doesn't seem to do the trick unless you watch them in an ironic drinking game way. Not sure if senility will be any different. But hope springs eternal for crotchety middle-aged cynics.

What I am saying is if the weapon does have this massive of a weakness they wouldn't show it till the final film of the trilogy. Otherwise it would diminish the character for him to keep using it in future films. They need to set him up as the trilogy's Darth Vader.

There might be something to be said for senility. I watched Vertigo again recently and realized I had completely forgotten the twist and the ending.

I also watched Return of the Jedi again recently, after having not seen it for a long time. It was a lot less...cinematic... than I remember. Very disappointing. The bluray was absolutely obnoxious, but I liked the "despecialized" version, with Vader's pixelated eyebrows floating oddly over his face...

Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back were every bit as good as I remember them, though.

it wouldn't be a massive weakness it would be almost as useless protecting the hands as the standard lightsaber

I'm not saying they will show it as a weakness.

I'm saying they will show it as a strength when he happens to catch a blow with it... And all of the nerds will groan because the blow just happens to hit on the red part instead of at the intersection (which would be more likely in a real sword fight).

I don't think you get to count the service life of your sexy robot body in calculating the middle.

Age is merely a state of mind.

Didn't Colbert or someone theorize that the side-blades actually do extend into the handle, and the metal tubes everyone freaks out about as a "weak point" are actually there to keep Ren from burning his own hands on the blade?

Seems like there's at least one way this makes sense.  Probably a few other ways that could be figured out as well.
