imperfect writing and script decision, end of story, you have to be a blind fan boy or a really casual fan to not see this
Can we stop repeating this over and over again?
First off. He got shot with a fucking bowcaster. The made a point of letting Han borrow it earlier in the movie and he scored a multi-kill with a single shot. He's using his god damned force power just to hold himself together (moments after murdering his own father).
Then he fights someone who may not be force sensitive, but has literally been trained for combat since birth, and who has basically just been walking around a space station...hasn't burned any serious energy yet.
Only after he deals with a trained killer does he turn his attention to Rey. Rey has already been shown to have some proficiency in melee combat growing up on the rough streets (dunes?) of Jaku. She's actually had to fight for her life before...he's probably never done anything more than spar with partners and let his armies do his actual dirty work. But he's not even trying to kill Rey. He is trying to convince her to join him and be his student.
He gets wounded as he haphazardly blocks her blows, but I'd hardly say he got totally "rekt". He's still alive and appears to have all limbs intact. Its a little funny when she says "Oh yeah, the force", closes her eyes for a second, and gains strength...but overall the scene is nothing like people try to portray it online.
