Once I snuck into a guarded area as pythagoras thaught me it was a shortcut to my friends. I was 'apprehended' by about twenty guards/taxi drivers and the one german shepherd. After the police picked me up I asked to be dropped off at the nearby McDonalds where my friends were to eat a quarter pounder.

Needless to say I'm now an expert guard, taxi driver, policeman and burger flipper.

The film showed the audience that she was a good mechanic through her actions and provided backstory to show how she was familiar with the MF. I'm not sure what else you want? There have been countless films where they introduce a character who is from the moment you meet them able excel at certain tasks. Why is it everyone expects a huge amount of exposition or backstory on film for everything Rey does well?

It's not JJ or Disney's fault if someone can't be bothered or is too stupid to follow along with the film they bought tickets too.

Seriously go back and read this thread. It's full of people complaining about things that didn't happen on film the way they seem to remember it. We are not even talking about poor interpretations for most of them, but things that they literally forgot or never absorbed in the first place.
Some yes, some no. You can find lots of people posting dumb, demonstrably inaccurate stuff on the internet in support of any proposition you can think of. That doesn't mean nothing in the universe is true.

We are talking specifically about this film and I stand by my statement that the majority of the "distracting inconsistencies" people have been complaining about are wrong. If you disagree with my posts in this thread countering those complaints you are more then welcome to prove me wrong.

Dude I love you, but every time someone proves you wrong you just fall back on the "it can be explained in other episodes" argument. This thread is a museum to circular arguments, non-responsive responses, straw man arguments, and moving goalposts. Of course, so are SF and the internet generally ...

Ah ok. Love you too but you keep avoiding any attempt to back your words up and are making broad generalizations. You are better this this man. I've put more then enough effort into doing so on my own behalf. How many times are you going to sidestep backing your statements up?

Also seriously? If you think all I'll replied to others with is "it will be explained in future episodes" and haven't presented numerous examples of things others got blatenly wrong from this very film, then you are either lying or haven't bothered to follow the thread.

The problem with The Force Awakens is that a lot of the political geography is absent from the film.

  • It is not explicitly stated that the Resistance operates in the First Order's territory.
  • The relationship between the Resistance and New Republic isn't entirely clear.
  • How well resourced is the Resistance? We don't see much more than a squadron of X-wings.
  • What are the Resistance's goals? Half a dozen fighters probably aren't going to overthrow a well resourced army of Space Nazis, though it did work last time...
  • There isn't a clear reason given for the destruction of Hosnian Prime.
  • What are the First Order's goals?
  • What territory does the First Order control? Is Jakku part of it? Is Takodana part of it?

Most of the above can be found in the supplementary "The Road to the Force Awakens" background reading. The fact that the film doesn't cover them strikes me as a minor flaw, particularly when it could have been inserted into dialogue through the film, rather than a big dump of exposition.

I don't mind the occasional plot hole or handwaving. Perhaps they'll do an anthology film giving the colourful story of how Luke's lightsaber ended up in Maz's hands, with a colourful story like England's Unluckiest Sword. Nor do I mind setting things up to pay off in later episodes. It's just that there's a certain amount of world building that appears to have been skipped.

Lol. Yeah I feel they they were so afraid of being accused of getting into prequel "trade negotiations" that they mostly avoided any talk of political climate. A lot of it can be assumed but a little exposition expanding upon it would have been nice. It's been 30 years after the events of ROTJ after all.

I'm also not 100% sure why they went with "resistance." Calling the splinter of the Empire the First Order I'm cool with, but how come they needed to rename the good side? Rebellion was such a classic name for the heroes and could have been carried forward into the new films.
Seriously. Who is the resistance resisting? Dumb name
post #2037 of 2848
I guess if they re-established the Republic after ROTJ, they're not really a "rebellion" anymore. Until the Republic got mega-maxi-Deathstarred, wasn't it sort of boss of the galaxy for at least a little while? "Resistance" doesn't seem like all that accurate a name either, however. They should have been the Department of Homesystem Security.

I mean I get that if you are on the side of the main power of the galaxy that you are not "rebelling" against anything, but resistance didn't work well as a replacement. I would have just left it as it was.

How about "Princess Leia's got a posse"?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, here...

I proposed that a better backstory for the MF's ready-to-fly condition could have been that Rey maintained it as an employee of the owner of the ship, which also could explain why she knew how to fly it.

You responded that my proposed backstory is
Quote:
the very creative character development for Rey that [I'm] bitching about. It's in the film's narrative that she worked for the owner and did maintenance on the MF

And, in fact, described it as "a perfect example" of the stupid complaints made against the movie.

I then cited a (2nd hand) account of the novelization of the movie (which is canon... probably?), that suggests Rey absolutely did NOT maintain the MF or ever fly it ("I never took anything or tried anything").

You then posted a picture of Unkar Plutt, the owner of the ship, with whom Rey bartered, not worked.

So, derp derp... what are you trying to say, exactly?
