Anyone mind recommending a handful of "essential" classical music pieces?

Classical era or do you mean western art music (stupid term) in general? My knowledge is pretty limited, but if you have no idea what you like you could look through something like the norton anthology of western music. Start with the second volume of that, though. Grooveshark is a reasonably good resource for finding recordings, but if you have access to naxos through your school library that's even better.

Here are some things you might like or maybe not!

Liszt (Un Sospiro)

Beethoven ("Eroica"/3rd Symphony)

Debussy (Pagodes)

Stravinsky (Rite of Spring)

Wagner (sup melancholia) (Tristan und Isolde Prelude)

Sibelius (5th Symphony, 3rd Movement)

Ah, thanks man. I just saw Melancholia the other day and loved the bits of Wagner strewn about—that's pretty much what brought my attention to this (very large) field of music that I have very little understanding of. I'll see if I have access to naxos, and hopefully the local library has the Norton Anthology hanging around.

I know close to nothing about classical music, but I really like the Bach string quartets and cello suites -- good for rainy mornings at work.

totally unrelated I've been listening to Slim Smith all weekend.

Not really "classical," but I've always been a fan of Prokofiev, especially the Romeo and Juliet ballet

Parker you have great taste in music. fing02[1].gif

I was browsing the Vintage Streetwear thread and saw a photo of Fela Kuti in one of Ivwri's posts. Hadn't heard of him before, but I really like this song. Looking forward to hearing more of his music and reading more of his biography.

And some kids I went to school with just released a really cool album.

Glad to see someone recommended Sibelius. Valse Triste is a great piece.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I've played a few classical pieces on my YouTube channel if you're interested.

Been waiting for this to jam on my summer road trip...reissue of King Tuff's 2008 album "was dead". NRBQ meets a "nuggets" compilation.

fistbump.gif   Fela is amazing. I think you'll really like his stuff and probably afrobeat in general. Water is one of my fave all time tracks. There's a neo-soul version with his son Femi Kuti and D'Angelo that came out awhile back which is also pretty great.

I am obviously saying this with bias... But Fela is the greatest musician of all time.

What does everyone think about Magna Carta Holy Grail? Beats are pretty fresh, but I don't know if I care for old ass Jay-Z raps in 2013. Wish someone more interesting got these beats like Danny Brown.

I'm sad the beat in the intro isn't a full song beat.

Seeing Raiden tomorrow, amongst others.
