When Ike hit us, we were without power for 15 days. We did have running water and a generator, though.

I remember when Ike came, everyone bbq'd for the next week. It was a party for like 5 straight days after Ike with everyone bbq'ing, hanging out, and drinking beer. I was living with my parents at the time and their power only went out for a day.

Was like that here in 2004. Actually a great time. Hung out with the neighbors, pretty much three days of hurricane parties.

Glad I'm camping out in central VA rather than in Philly. Still, I hadn't fully realized until now that it's possible to be in a state of agitation and utter boredom at the same time.

Just northeast of DC and the wind/rain sound as though we're on the coast listening to the waves coming in. Not bad yet; basement of 91-year-old house is still dry. I spent yesterday morning chopping wood in anticipation of power dying later, but neighbors claim our block is mysteriously immune to Pepco's customary soap-dropping, and the derecho bears that out -- things flickered a few times but we never lost power like so many others did.

Had to walk the dog a couple of times today and the only other people I saw out were poor soaked sods walking their own dogs... trenchcoat and akubra wide-brimmed hat FTW.

Haven't broken out the rum and ginger beer yet because I'm on the clock 'til 5pm. 5:01 hits and it's dark 'n stormy time.

RIP LBI. The bay and ocean have met in Beach Haven and high tide isn't until 8pm.

Is it true that they're shutting off power in parts of NYC preemptively?

Federal government closed tomorrow. DC isn't that bad yet, but shit is supposed to hit the fan beginning at 6 PM.

I saw that and am thinking shenanigans. Haven't seen any other pictures remotely similar. It's possible that it's an older picture though because I have seen storms like that while out on the bay before.
