MTM Time. Bday is coming up and Fiancee is buying me 3 suits and 2 sports coats. Since i get to star

I have a polyester grey suit from kenneth cole that i love, but even though it fits awesome its quality is pure sh!t. my other suit is navy blue with faint pinstripes fits ok but is also cheap. This will be my first MTM experience.

By chance are you getting them from Elite Suits?

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

just wanted to know what color suits and sport coats i should be looking towards

besides navy blue and charcoal grey i am not sure which colors would follow given the parameters set

Why you shouldn't go straight to MTM: you are currently at a vey early stage in your tastes and knowledge. In the same way you wouldn't give a 17 year old kid a Ferrari to drive, you don't go from a $300 suit to a $1800 suit. Do you prefer two or three buttons? What width of lapel best suits your frame? Jumping in at the deep end is exiting but it will most likely end up with your owning 5 very expensive garments that do nothing to flatter your body. Take the time to understand the subtleties and nuances of suits and begin to make informed decisions.

If you still insist on going ahead right now, then you need basics: one charcoal suit and one navy blue suit. A mid-grey or pinstripe for when you want to mix it up.

One blue sports coat. Something textured, no pattern. If you're a real classicist then go for a navy blazer with gold buttons. If not then maybe some kind of Birdseye or hop sack. The second sports coat can be something tweedy and green or maybe something like a grey herringbone. Always look for more texture in a sports coat than you would have in a suit.

And remember, you will get a bad reaction here is you go from cheap **** to high quality in one leap, you need to take the time to learn, understand and research your decisions. Money is far and away the easiest part of the journey, expecting to skip the hard work will rub a lot of people the wrong way.

Because if you've never owned a "nice" RTW suit you probably won't have a good sense of what specifically you are hoping to accomplish by spending more for MTM vs. RTW. That is a recipe for future regret.

I speak from personal experience. I have a MTM suit from a Hong Kong tailor I bought years before discovering SF. The thing is an abomination and I would never wear it today. Fit is horrible, fabric is garish, and the style is very period-specific and already dated. In contrast, my 15 year old RTW charcoal gray suit from J. Press that I once thought was lame and boring (hence the HK suit) has turned out to be the nicest, most stylistically enduring and most durable article of clothing I ever purchased.

But kudos to your fiancee for wanting to do something nice for you...

+1 to everything Blackhood said. At the very least, do 1 MTM suit first and wear it a few times before commissioning your other pieces.

Thank you so much for your comment. As to developing my style, in the recent years I think I have a good idea what I like. What's more, i don't 'think' any of the choices I make will be regrettable with respect to fit so long as I come prepared with a couple pictures to show the tailor. Am I missing something. If i come into the haberdashery with these 2 pics I should be money, right?

Yes, lots can go wrong. I'm assuming you've never used this tailor before? Even if you do have a mutual understanding about how you want it to look in the end, it may not come out exactly right. If you do everything all at once, you'll have 5 flawed garments. If you do them one by one, you can improve them as you go.

This is even apart from the fact that the tailor might misunderstand you, or you might not talk about some things with him that he will decide for himself when making the garment. There are many many decisions that are made in the production of a jacket. You will almost certainly not discuss all of them. You have to arrive at some level of trust with a tailor, where you believe that these decisions will be made in a way that you like later on. You may end up discovering that this tailor is either unwilling or unable to make things the way that you like them. Again, if you do all 5 things at once, you won't know this until you've already received and paid for 5 things you aren't really happy with.
