Hardware looks professional enough with the black touchcover. You don't have to use one of the other colors.

If you are talking from a UI standpoint, get used to it. That's what Windows 8 looks like. The user interface is what Microsoft is moving the company towards and eventually you won't even get the old desktop for backwards compatibility.

I don't believe it for a second. No professional person could tolerate that UI. It's laughable. This will be a huge bust.

Believe it. Windows 8 style UI (formally known as Metro) is Microsoft's new user interface design language. It may get tweaked over time, but they are betting the company's future on it taking off.

I'm not arguing that or not. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 8 turns out to be the next Vista for them. What I am saying is you are kidding yourself if you think they are going to toss the whole UI concept out the door and move back to the old desktop. Window's 9 may see a lot of changes from 8, but one should still expect the touch friendly tile based interface to stay even if highly tweaked.

To expand on this, Windows ME and Windows Vista were both failures for MS in the sense that consumers largely did not like the products. That's didn't prevent MS from moving forward with their plans for the platform. Windows 8 will be no different. The company is entrenched enough and has a fair amount of money in the bank to weather a storm or two.

"Metro" was just the name of the new interface. It's always been "Windows 8". The Pro version of Windows 8, which runs on x86, has a "Classic" desktop alongside Metro and they can be switched back and forth. I don't think the ARM version of Windows 8 has a Classic desktop: it'll only run Metro.

It looks to me like Metro is the default desktop and users will have to opt-in to the Classic desktop. Classic, along with Windows Forms, is probably on its way out.

Interesting information for those considering a Surface RT. Apparently the OS and system files take up 16 gigs of storage. So if you buy the 32 gig version, you only have half that to work with.

Was such a radical change in aesthetic / UI smart for Microsoft? I wonder how many people will follow the same thought process as me, which is that if I'm going to learn how to use a new OS then I might as well just buy an Apple. Are they trying to purge from the Windows base all the would-be Mac users that have been too lazy to switch over until now?

That's crazy. Isn't Win RT supposed to be a mobile OS?

I think both iOS and Android only take less than 1gig, including OS and system files.

It's probably because they also ported over the legacy desktop and full versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Honestly, it's just another reason RT should be only using the Metro UI. It's absurd they included desktop too.
