Here's a Raleigh badge:

Never ridden a Phoenix but I hear the performance and build quality doesn't match the shine.

For the same money I suppose one could pick up a sturdy dutch opafietsen, or as folks have said find an old Raleigh tourer or something. For newish custom I really like and Cykelmageren, Arrow and Jitensha Studio. Velo Orange is doing some nice bikes as well.

What a wonderful thread; it's making me think about polishing up my dad's old Raleigh and riding it.

When I was in college, I bought a Klein for mountain biking, and now I find myself trying to alter that high performance mountain bike into something that can transport my 18 month old daughter on little trips. I don't think the folks at Klein had attaching a child seat in mind when they designed it. I also replaced the race saddle with a classic Brooks, which just felt like the right thing to do.

My father has an old British Racing Green Raleigh safely stored in his garage. Often have I bothered him with insinuations of me using it, however so far he has ignored my request..

If you like touring a custom bike is a great investment. My Dave Yates Wayfarer.

It that some sort of laptop or nav system on the bars, or a magazine holder? What's it weight?
No, just a map holder.

F*ing heavy with all my stuff and my wife's for a two week tour. She carries all her make-up which weighs a ton too. I think I mentioned in this thread or another that a lb or two saved with a lightweight frame is more than countered by my weight, the weight of our stuff and the water. It's a steel frame 26" wheel tourer.
