First do the shoes fit?

This has been an issue on some AE shoes. Unfortunately the bowing is an issue with the shoe construction and can not be corrected. If it really bothers you you can likely return them. Post some photos; I have seen bowing anywhere from slight to downright terrible.

?? at the ankle joint?  as in the top of the heel cup biting into your joints slightly?

I always have some bowing on the 5 last, it is a strange last to fit right. If it is not extreme, you should be ok. If it is extensive, try a different last...

I have had this problem with AE shoes, the five last in particular. I put some tongue pads on the tongue which effectively pulls some of the slack out of the throat, creating tension front to back. This has tightened it up for me so that the issue largely goes away.

Shoe too wide/big.

way too wide for you.  lacing is completely closed and so much room around your heels its not even funny.
