I'd have to say that my pick would be bruschetta. It's got everything: fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper, and good bread. If everything is fresh, the basic ingredients stand on their own.

I love biting in, tasting the tomatoes, the basil, the saltiness, and finally the little bit of bite from the freshly ground pepper. I can't imagine a more perfect combination of ingredients.

I just ate it, in case you can't tell.

Surprisingly, some of the best bruschetta I've ever had was at Sophias... but that was a long time ago.

Proper fresh bread is perfection. Shellshock, my potato pancakes are legendary. If I ever come out to the West Coast I'll have to hook you up. Regards, Huntsman

since several of you have mentioned bruschetta, i will toss in this off-topic rant.

bruschetta is pronounced "bruce"-"ketta" NOT "broo"-"shetta". in italian, the letters "ch" make a "k" sound, as in pinocchio, gnocchi, or chianti. if you are one of the many people, including italian americans, who mispronounce this word, please stop. you now have no excuse.

also, there is no such thing as a panini. the word for sandwich is panino, and it refers to any type of sandwich, not necessarily an italian one. the plural form of panino, is panini.

similarly, the word salsa means "sauce" in spanish and italian. it can be hot sauce, ketchup, bbq sauce, hollandaise sauce, steak sauce, you get the picture. please stop refering to any mexican condiment as simply 'salsa'. they have names.

end rant.

Wow this is so hard.

-A nicely done cheeseburger is hard to beat. Throw in some ketchup, bacon, a little bit of lettuce...on a hearty sesame bun...oh god my mouth is watering.

-Crab cakes. I had some in Seattle that were to die for.

-Pan seared salmon.

-CHOCOLATE.

Not just any nicely done cheeseburger - the cheeseburger at Father's Office in Santa Monica is the king of all cheeseburgers. Beef ground on premises every day, a mixture of French Gruyere and Maytag Blue cheeses, arugula, a bacon/onion compote all on a toasted french roll. I'm not usually a fan of "gourmet" burgers, but this one is the bomb. Plus the setting is a dark little bar with about 50 microbrews on tap and a wide selection of nice wines by the glass. The fish taco at Papa's Tacos in Laguna Beach. The Carne Asada taco at El Parian in L.A.

Home-made brownies from scratch, really dense, with plenty of half-melted chocolate chips in the middle, and a dusting of powdered sugar on top to sweeten the lips as you eat them.

Indeed, nothing pisses me off more than going to a restaurant like Cheesecake Factory and ordering this appetizer with proper pronunciation, only for the pimple-faced server to correct me with, "Oh, okay, one order of bruSHETTA."

I think there's an obvious solution to that problem...

It's fine and well to try and pronounce words correctly, but when you go off on other people, expect that they tear into you when you inevitably butcher some German or French word. Again, I've never heard an American (or most Canadians for that matter), pronounce a French word correctly, so if you want to dish it out, be prepared to take it... I can only imagine the horrors of hearing people's orders at the French Laundry.

You refer to the server as Mr.Kevin and complain audibly about the other diners' slovenly attire.
