I recently purchased a couple Hickey Freeman suits from STP, which I came to learn are actually Hickey Freeman Ltd (Lindsay Model). I paid just under $500 for each suit.
I brought the suits to a tailor this weekend thinking that I still had received a good deal despite the fact that they were not mainline Hickey Freeman. The tailor did not think so, and pointed to some Baroni suits that he had on the rack for $489, (with about $90 in alterations included--he is a good tailor in the area). He said they were manufactured in the same factor as E. Zegna, and were of a much higher quality than what I had brought into the store. I have several questions:
1.) Did I receive a good deal on the Hickey Freeman Ltd. suits?
2.) Has anyone heard of Baroni (Prive line), and are they of better quality than the HF Ltd.? Are they full or half-canvass? I have seen that they can be had for less than $400 from online retailers--are those individuals reliable?
3.) If not either of these brands, what is my best bet for a suit in $500 area?
First and foremost, I need to decide whether to return the HF Ltd. suits. Then it's back to the drawing board. I am not in an extreme rush to get a new suit, but I also can't wait until something shows up at Nordstrom Rack.
All this aside, I am looking for some solid suits (charcoal, black, or navy). I'm just under 6'1", 180 lbs. I have found that 40R suits are too small for my shoulders and chest, but I don't really fill out a traditional 42R suit, so I am thinking that my best bet is a European 52R, or slim/tapered 42. If it means getting a much better suit, I am open to spending a bit more.
Any advice would be much appreciated, and I apologize in advance if this thread is redundant.
