Suggestions for trip to Italy –Naples, Postino, Amalfi area

To celebrate our anniversary my wife and I want to return to Italy next year in late September/ early October. We have been to the major northern cities but never to the south. We are considering Naples, Postino, Ravello, Amalfi areas. I would appreciate any suggestions for a two-three week trip to this region. What to do? What to avoid?

Aside from bespoke clothing (that has been well covered in other threads) any food or wine experiences to suggest? Any beach or boating? Any other must-see sights that time of year? What about the islands outside of Naples?

Typically we like to spend several days in any one location. So maybe four locations max.

Any input and suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Gus

Two to three weeks is a lot of time in that area unless you rent a house. We rented a house on the hills in Positano when I was in high school, and it was a truly epic experience. Look into that possibility. Otherwise, it would be hard for me to do more than a few days in Naples, a few days in Capri and a couple days in a coastal town. Positano and Ravello both have awesome hotels, Ravello has one, Positano two, but the two are very different so you kind of know which one you will like. Food is much better in Naples than in the areas around it. The standards, which are not to be missed, are Dora, l'Europeo and probably Ciro. Rossiella is beautiful with very good food, I'd suggest it for lunch because the views are amazing. Hotels in Naples are kind of sucky. The Excelsior is probably the "nicest" but it is a niceness of faded glory, as is most of the town, which is why it is a great place to visit, but not for a long stay.

By the way, what is the best way to get to the region around Naples? What route will have the least amount of connections from the US west coast?
