Does Styleforvm make a difference?

Like being weaned off infant formula, once the reader matures in his style choices, then Styleforum becomes more an entertainment forum for the typical drama.

Learning how to be stylish takes time, lots of trial & error, commitment, and money.

I'm fairly new here, but have been interested in men's style for quite some time. Thought I'd lend my 2c.

I'd say that this is a great resource for style tips, but much of the info also needs to be taken with a grain of salt. There are a lot of very passionate people on here who have very specific tastes, so the critiquing can be a little overly harsh.

But yes, we are all like-minded in that we want to start looking good when out and about. Paying attention to the details, the trends, etc. is a learning process and this place helps facilitate these types of conversation.

Happy for you that you were able to help someone with their style a bit, because at the end of the day, maybe that's what it's all about.

Here is my Ode To Styleforvm.
I came to Styleforum (and other sites) as the result of researching the history behind the clothes men wear today and have worn in the past. Certainly I have learned much from many people here. The old saying, 'When the student(s) is (are) ready, the teacher(s) will appear.' has proven true from both sides for me. As many have patiently shared their time and vast weatth of knowledge, so I also contribute what I can, in turn. The learning never stops as long as we seek it and the teaching never stops as long as there are those who come after. It is an ocean of sorts.
While other like-minded sites maintain a more reserved and conservative approach, and rightly so, Styleforum, to its equal credit, accommodates a much wider latitude of ethnicities, behaviours, social scales and lifestyles. Also, a little boisterous behaviour from time to time, can be a lot of fun, provided there is the presence of self-governance.
What I find of equal importance to the clothing is gentlemanly conduct. Without the practice of appropriate ettiquite, the importance of the clothing alone can become lost. Chivalry, good manners, modesty and humility are, in my opinion, of even greater importance to dressing well, for this is one of several regions where a person will be defined by his peers, superiors and others. The clothing, conclusively, is the icing on the cake.
I do not say this to outrightly foist my views of morality upon others, but to encourage the observance of the ideologies which makes a man a gentleman. It should never be practiced with pretense but rather with encouragement and fairness and respect toward others.
Styleforum has made a tremendous difference to me.
It has heightened my awareness and enriched my enjoyment of clothes. It has both encouraged and furthered my social skills. It is a wonderful crossroads where all social classes and personalities may meet and exchange and benefit. It is a wellspring where we may hone our skills, to then take those skills out into the world as we are met by legions of clowns, and by the very will of its participants, will it continue to prosper, and so I say, thank you Styleforum, and may ye live long.

myk - I think many SFers go through a kind of arc, of which acridsheep's life cycle captures part, where they first come to the site very confident, then get beat down a bunch and get obsessed with gaining the approval of well-known members, and then eventually settle into their own style where they appreciate the opinions of others but sometimes decide that they still like it their way.

I came to SF, and i knew nothing. Then after a bit, i thought i knew something, only to realize i still knew nothing. Now i feel like i actually know some, crossing my fingers that it counts for something.

I have slowly infected the uncultured souls around me, so now they think they know something, but they don't...

I think SF is a great community, very helpful and very relevant . Newbies are welcome to have inputs themselves but the search tool isquite useful as well. Overall, as long as people are interested in fashion and need ideas for their personal style, SF will continue for along long time.
