Hey I have just read on the German GQ that Tom Ford, Gucci suits are made by Zegna, is that true?

Not much to say, but Yup.

Could convolute a little further and suggest informally what I have noticed:

Tom Ford made to Zegna Couture Standards although with usually radically different styling.

Gucci appear to have two different Zegna made lines:

One "line" consistent with Mainline Zegna (although some Gucci suits of late 90's/early 00's vintage appear to have been made to Zegna Couture Standards offering perhaps a theoretical third level of quality).

Other "line" consistent with Z Zegna. Typically fused (not even half canvassed) although they do pick stitch the lapels

They are all part of the Zegna umbrella

The naming is just nitpicking since I believe much of Mainline and Couture are made in same Italian factory by same employees.

A lot of Mainline is also made in Switzerland.

The Z line is made anywhere in world where cheap labor can be sourced. I last heard they were made in Mexico.

Pretty sure Gucci are not made in Mexico, comparison of lower end Gucci (suits with retail under 2K) with Z Zegna was a comparison of quality.

Some of Tom Ford's stuff is made in switzerland as well. The factory is on the border of switzerland and italy and depending on which part of the factory it is produced in it will say either "Made in Italy" or "Made in Switzerland". TF also has a line of shirts (usually those in a very loud design) that is produced in Turkey I'm not sure if these are by zegna as well

Does this imply that Mainline and Couture are made to the same standard(as using the same employees) or is there still a quality difference due to different fabric used?

There are quality differences between the lines.

With in the lines there are differences in fabric.

This means you can buy a high quality cashmere mainline or a basic linen couture.

The cashmere fabric would be considered nicer but the quality of the over all couture jacket better.

So just to make sure, the difference is the workmanship as the linen couture jacket would still be considered superior although cashmere is the nicer fabric.
