I recently got this suit from J crew (ludlow in charcoal gray "worsted wool"--not solid; looked like nailhead in the lighting in the store but when I took it home it appeared to just be stitching with two shades of gray and white/light gray).
I'm rather new to suits and am not sure exactly where I can wear this and where it might stand out too much, look pretentious or look overly casual.
I'm currently in academia (but am looking to work in development as well) and got the suit thinking it would be great for conferences and lectures, and perhaps job interviews in non-profits. I'm uncertain how formal I can make this suit. Would this sort of thing be able to fly at 'formal' (but not quite black tie) dinners? Or is it too light/patterned? Could it be worn at interviews for jobs at more conservative institutions? Could you wear it to receptions and networking events at 'prestigious clubs'.
Besides this, I have the old, ill-fitting tux made of polyester, a tan/light brown sport coat and a classic navy blazer. Do I need a more formal suit in solid navy/darker gray?
Summary: Where would you wear this and wear would you not be caught dead in it?
