How long and how many times do you normally wear a new pair shoes at home before you wear them for a full day?

It all depends on the shoe types and constructions. As well as depends on you how you wear your shoes. Some double leather goodyear welted shoes could take up to 10-15 wears to break in.
I walk about 0.5-0.8k a day. For me double leather sole takes about 12-15 wears and single leather sole about 7-10 wears. How ever I had few pairs that took over 20 wears to break in.

Makes sense, it all kind of just depends on the type of the shoe. So do you ever wear them around the house for a couple of times for a few hours before wearing them all day?

I'm of the opinion that shoes ought to be pretty damn comfortable right out of the box. If they're slightly uncomfortable I'll wear them around the house on carpeted surfaces for a few days in my leisure time, which only amounts to about an hour a day. If they're still not comfortable after that, back they go.

It depends on what "breaking in" means to you...and perhaps how sensitive your feet are.

A really good...handmade...shoe will have thicker insoles, often a "midliner" running between the upper and the liner from the heel to the toe (making three layers), and denser, stiffer outsoles.

Until all of that flexes enough that the fibers of the leather have loosened, the shoes will be stiff at the very least. For some people, I suppose, that alone would equate to discomfort.

To the extent that a shoe is made with leatherboard or fiberboard insoles, or even a thin, soft, raggy, leather insole and without midliners (and what factory made shoe these days does have midliners??) and a soft outsole, the shoe will be easier to break in.

All that said, hot spots and discomfort in the form of pressure or pain is probably not acceptable for most people ...nor should it be.

I don’t wear shoes at home. I wear them to work and if they are a bit too stiff I take them off at work and hide my feet under the desk. There are different types of feet and different types of last. Not all last will be suitable for your feet. So as you wear your new shoes they will stretch and takes your foot shape. So if you buy a pair of shoes that will “Stretch and fit better” then break in would be longer. How ever this is quite rewarding after the painful break in. And if the pair is comfortable right out of the box it will take less time to break in. I prefer to get a pair that are comfortable right out of the box. But some times some pairs are too narrow and long (I wear 8 EEE) and not offered in wide sizes then I take the gamble(not very often).

IME:
  • If the heel stiffener is leather, a couple of hours wear helps it to begin the process of molding a little. If it's synthetic, well, IMO the "breaking in" is really just the user developing a few calluses, rather than the shoe noticeably changing. Maybe the sole becomes a bit more flexible.
  • It also depends on the toe spring. Some shoes in which the last is shaped so that the toe area is quite high off the ground hardly need to bend at all during walking. These don't require much breaking in, at least in terms of sole flexibility.

I like to put conditioner on the vamp before the first use, and i wear them for about 4 hours. That would be the extent of my breaking in, i then polish and ready them for the next use.

Using recomendations I found here, I actually used conditioner on the entire shoe first thing out of the box.
