There's another company that does a straight razor thing like the Feathers (Schick?) that are used by lots of barber shops due to hygiene laws or some such.

Feather makes some razors and razor combs for barbers, but these are pretty much just handles that hold a blade, much like the Dovo Shavette. The Artist Club is a hefty, solid-brass contraption. I think the review from Shaveblog says it best:

"The Artist Club is like the Darth Vader version of the Dovo Shavette I used yesterday. It's bigger, badder, more deadly, and it brooks no slop. The Shavette is plenty sharp but it still lets you get away with less than dead-on technique. With the Feather, you blink, you die."

You can read the rest of the review at: http://www.shaveblog.com/2005_05_01_archive.html

It's the May 30 entry called "Scary Razor".

I've just been using one of those gilette fusion disposable razors for the past year or so. I'm only 21 and don't really grow much facial hair, but i have to shave every few days just so it doesn't look awkward. I do find a hard time getting a decently close shave with the pivot gilette razor and i can still see some visible stubble sometimes after shaving. As a poor college student who doesn't grow much facial hair, i'm not really going to get into straight razor shaving. Could anyone reccomend a decent razor and shaving cream/foam(i didn't know the gel stuff in the can sucked, any reason why?)?

Be very careful with the Feather Artist straights...they are MUCH sharper I hear than the regular straight razors. If you use it the way you use a normal straight, you are going to butcher your face. I won't go anywhere near one. chronoaug: I like old double edge safety razors myself, but if you don't want to go that route, go for the Gillete Sensor Excel. The replacement cartridges are much cheaper than the Mach 3 and Fusion, and it's twice as good a shaver as both.
