Opinion on my tie choice(s)

Thread Starter

First off, you are all great(for the most part).  I've used the search button many time over the past 2 weeks.  I've read countless threads to inform myself on what I should do for my first suit purchase.

I didn't own a suit until earlier today sort of.....I chose a bespoke suit in almost navy thanks to this site of course.  Single breast 2 button.  Again because of style forum i'll be going with a darkish brown or oxblood oxford shoe(still undecided).  I don't have pictures of anything yet.  My first fitting will be in approx 4 weeks.  I'm thinking a white shirt NOT light blue and white pocket square.  First wear will be a fall wedding.  I don't wear suits often with a slim/athletic build 35 but look mid to high 20's 5'10" if that matters.  Any other questions fire away.

Now the tie.  Color and Style (bow tie scares me but the lady likes em) but I do have ones I like and I'm looking for opinions on the many I have picked out so here goes.  Still looking for a green that I like...

If anybody is interested I can keep you updated with photos of the suit in progress?

Thanks!!

After a lot of further reading/searches today I see deeper shade likes and silver and lighter blue for the navy/midnight blue suit choice so...

I only ask as I've read countless tie threads with people posting pics of there arsenal with ties I think seem ok and many say throw those out.

Thanks again fashion experts

Most of them are really sharp.  You have good taste in color and makers.  Number 6  - appears to be an orange/grey stripe does not get my vote and neither does the bright blue with yellow design.  The blue plaid one is a keeper, but appears to be wrinkled.  You can try pressing them out carefully with a steam iron and pressing cloth, but I would suggest returning it and finding a duplicate of at all possible.  Overall, I think you did very well - I'd like numbers 1,4 and 9 for myself.

Most of what you've pictured are overly shiny, satiny ties in bad patterns. They are not 'sharp' at all and I really wish we wouldn't get so many new members turning up to give people bad advice. The only half decent one is the baby-blue Feragamo tie.

My advice would be to look through the HOF: What Are You Wearing... thread and there is also a thread about Tie and Shirt Combinations here somewhere, and learn. Then have a look in the MC Buying & Selling section here - there are always members selling good ties (or anyway, ties that will be better than these) at reasonable prices. Educate yourself about style and quality and buy carefully and slowly.

Actually I think this as a really annoying pattern...but I agree that the others are not great either. Ties 1, 4, 13 might be OK depending how shiny they turn out in reality vs. the photo.

I don't like the satiny, shiny finishes either.

I must really second FlyingMonkey here. I don't think any of them looks particularly sharp. If I were you I would go for something more basic and less shiny.

Ah, yes - should have mentioned that one in particular - an excellent thread.

Also, try to avoid tie sets with matching pocket squares and cufflinks.

Thanks to all so far.  Funny thing is as I was looking at a few of the pics posted yesterday I was thinking some looked a little flat.  Now after reading most comments and looking back at what was posted several are shinny....way to shinny.  Thanks for specific links i'm checking them right now  You would think as other say in other threads picking a tie for a dark blue suit is easy and it should be but...to many choices.

Fully agree on that one.  I was thinking white or cream pocket square regardless of tie choice. The matching combo is hideous IMO

So it seems that going with a grenadine will eliminate that shine on may of the original tie choices.

This is very sharp once I see it used in a whole outfit pic.

I think i'm on to something here lol

Grenadine is very, very nice:  www.samhober.com.  Would not be my go-to option for a wedding, though.

Yes Hober seems to be a popular choice around these parts.  I've been there many a time over the past few days.

So your go-to options(s) would be??

Thanks for the earlier links....there goes my sunday.
