Jean-Louis Vaudoyer was a central figure of the arts in Paris in the first half of the 20th century, forgotten by history to some extent due to his Petainisme. He famously accompanied Proust to see the Vermeer "View of Delft" and his influence led in part to the famous Bergotte death scene with the little yellow wall that causes him to question the value of his life's work.

Note the choice, by someone who is perhaps at the apex of classical culture for his civilisation, of not just bow ties but deliberately askew, soft structured ones, a stark contrast with the impeccable brillantine'd hair.
