Looking to get this cable cashmere sweater in the fall.

Going through the forums I've seen some a wide range of reviews on J. Crew cashmere over the past decade, ranging from really bad quality to the best to be bought in the price range.

What's the current consensus on J. Crew's cashmere sweaters?

Wait for it to go on sale. I own one (Also the only cashmere sweater I own) and I like it a lot. Soft, warm, and good looking.

J.Crews quality of cashmere they use is amazing. However the wash process it goes through is garbage.

I haven't bought any of their cashmere recently, but got some for xmas 2 or 3 years ago. I find it to be of inferior quality. I think it's suspicious that they call it "J Crew Cashmere" instead of just "cashmere". Makes me suspect that it isn't 100% or something. I buy my cable cashmere sweaters from Ralph Lauren, and find it to be nicer. My little sister's freind works for an Italian cashmere importer, but can't remember what she said about it...

I think the fact that it costs less than most other cashmere should tell you something.

I found myself nodding in agreement as I read what you said. It's true: J.Crew's cashmere sweaters are of a passable quality, but let's not make much of them. Soft, warm, and snuggly, you'll also find them pilling after two solid wears--and this coming from someone who takes good care of his, I imagine, should hold some weight. For their price, J.crew could afford to give you a better product. But then again, the price of cashmere is raising quickly.

I agree their cashmere quality is passable, but is still lower than others like RL, so I also buy only when on sale.

For the love of christ , listen to me when I say this. The quality of the actual cashmere J.crew uses it top of the line. They literally buy 100's of thousands of kilos at a time from a TOPmill. However the wash process that they use and the way the knit it actual sweater takes away for the overall package. You need to re word your statements. I am speaking in fact while you are speaking in assumptions.
Do you even know what the top cashmere companies are?
In the end you get what you pay for and from what I know ( and is fact) it's worth the money it you can't afford or don't understand the value of a really great cashmere sweater.

If you are implying that it's LP, it's not really. Production is licensed to LP, which sub-contracts it out to other mills using 2nd rate fibers.

The best cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia in China where the lambs are subject to harsh extremes and dramatic temperature fluctuations. I'm not sure why J. Crew trumps up Italian cashmere as if it's top notch. I honestly didn't even know that Italy has cashmere lambs. For cashmere to be high quality, the lambs have to live in harsh extreme climates. Climates that Italy does not have.

The way I test to see whether cashmere is high quality is by wearing it bareback so to speak. In other words, I wear it without a shirt underneath and directly on my skin. If at the end of the day, or even after a couple of days, you start to itch, it's inferior cashmere. If you can wear it comfortably without any itching whatsoever, it's good cashmere.

Don't judge cashmere by brands. I've experienced Ralph Lauren Purple Label cashmere sweaters that itched and were super thin, and cheap $180 LL Bean cashmere sweaters that were thick and soft. You need to feel it and put it on for extended periods of time to know.

I'm not sure about the cashmere, but I have some merino sweaters from J.Crew and they pill like crazy. If the cashmere is knitted the same way, I'd expect something similar.
