softening a beard?

So I'm trying out a beard for the first time. I'm finding it to be really bristly... anybody know some kind of "facial hair conditioner"" that I could use to soften up my whiskers?

You can use moisturizer, which will help. I've heard of people using hair conditioner as well, but it depends on how sensitive your face is. As it grows out, it definitely will get less bristly though. You have the sharp, recently-cut ends of the hairs all sticking out right now.

Paul Mitchell The Conditioner (leave in) can also be used as a facial moisturizer, so give that a try. Just go easy to avoid white residue.

J speaks the truth as far as it become less bristly as it gets longer. My side burns are scary sharp for about two weeks when I grow them in, then soften right up.

I use plain old wash out conditioner to soften my beard pre-shave, and it works well enough for me. I suspect it would work equally as well for a grown in beard.

My father brushes his with a badger hair brush, but I guess it's more a matter of length, try using a vitamin hair conditioner, like Self Absorbed (TIGI) or horse shampoo, like Lucky Kentucky. I know that they make the hair on your head extremely soft.

The horse shampoo, if used on the head of your head atleast, will make your hair soft and smooth, and will help growth a lot. I do mean a lot. EDIT: I wish I could possibly stimulate facial hair growth. Does shaving actually work? I've heard mixed yes' and no's, so could someone give me a bit of their experience?

No, shaving doesn't work. Increasing testosterone or changing your diet might "stimulate facial hair growth."
