Anyway, I think it is a good idea just to invest instead doing any sort of rental. My worries are more that I have to settle with black instead of the midnight blue which it's getting more and more apparent that if I got RTW, I'll need to.
Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely consider that. Would you know the turnaround time for such MTM with Suit Supply? And can anyone confirm that Suit Supply is actually half-canvas?

Yes, it is unfortunate that so many are now offered OTR as notch lapel (or otherwise incorrect with two buttons, vents, belt loops, etc.). However, in today's world of mass production it is undoubtedly easier to simply use an identical pattern for the suits as the tuxedos with the one possible difference being a single button front.

As to your Suit Supply questions, sorry, I'm not able to help much... I'd never even heard of them till I read something about them coming to Chicago, at which point I looked them up. The website does give some estimates for turn around time, though I cannot confirm how accurate those are. Also, if you plan to order one or more RTW suits to try in order to know if it's possible to just order a custom job in a stock size then you'll probably need a few more weeks. All that being said, even if you were unable to travel until January and the suit took four months you'd have it in plenty of time.

I asked in the UK so it may be different, but they said their normal RTW suits & jackets are half-canvas, and the MTM is full-canvas. Just call them and confirm this is true for dinner suits too.

While I agree that one should call to be sure, I cannot imagine full canvasing not at least being an option on a MTM dinner suit, even if the OTR version has no canvasing.

I got one bespoke earlier this year and went for a midnight blue single breasted, single-button, no vents, peak lapels, the trousers had raised side-seams and side-adjusters on the waist (no belt loops, no turn-ups), and I had the sleeve buttons and lapels in black grosgrain. Accessories were black whole-cut oxfords, black bow tie (grosgrain), black and silver cuff-links, white marcella shirt with cream MoP buttons and turn-down collar, black cummerbund as waist covering, and white linen pocket square. After 6 events it will work out cheaper than if I rented a dinner suit each time, and the fit/look is a vast improvement on my old RTW number.
can we see photos of yours?

who was the maker?

The OP should really assess his travel schedule the next couple of months and see if he'll be in a city with good, reasonably priced MTM options. SS is in Chicago, Washington and NYC, not sure where KW is, and I know a good friend of mine who found good MTM in Boston for about $600.

Can you let me know the name of the Boston store? Thanks!

+2, I am from Boston and I have never heard of such a deal. Drinkwaters is a great option via Samuelsohn, but thats in the 1-3k range.
