Desk/office chair

Thread Starter
Since I'll be spending a significant time studying for the CA bar for the next couple of months, I was thinking of investing in a nice desk chair...something comfortable, supportive (I have a bad back.), and long-lasting would be great. I have no idea how much they cost, I guess I'd spend bw $500-1000? I've never done any furniture shopping in my life (outside of ikea and the likes) so I'd appreciate any leads. So...c'mon guys, any suggestions? Online or in the LA area is good for me. And as always, discounts are nice.

IF I were a rich man...Yadadadadadadada.... (From Fiddler on the roof...) ANyway... If I were a rich man. or had the money involved and didnt have to pay a mortgage etc... I would go with a Herman Miller Aeron. In fact, one person that I know that DOES HAVE THE MONEY (and has the bad back etc...) ...uses only that. I know nothing about the link I am giving you as I googled it, but use it as a starting place to find out more. maybe some people in your locale have sales etc... Aeron Chair Good luck. JJF

I second the recommendation on the Aeron. I've sat in one, most recently in the office of a small company that had bought three on E-Bay...

Amazing. I like the reproduction of Nelson's atomic style, but the price is incredibly high for the replicas. Does anyone know of any other, potentially more affordable elegant furniture e-tailers?

I have a a Herman Miller Aeron chair. Very comfortable. I use it in my home den/library/lair for playing computer games and doing other computer tasks. My wife mocked me for buying such an expensive chair, but after she sat in it, she made me buy her one for her office too. Well worth the money, particularly if you (like me) have a bad back. Kai

Which model? I've been toying with the idea of getting one, but I really have no idea whether the higher-dollar models offer anything real more than the base one.

Cherry Malouf Style Office Chair How about something a bit more rustic? Done well, a hardwood chair is every bit as comfortable as an 'engineered' one.

With the bad back, eschew the rustic style of hardwood and get an Aeron. They are really comfortable, especially with the leather arms. I am lucky enough to have some no-brand desk chair probably from Costco that is actually very comfortable. I'd recommend it to you for a cheap option, but I have no idea of the brand name.

I got the fully adjustable regular one (as opposed to the stripped down "basic" one.) Mine is fully adjustable, but is a couple of years old, so it might not have all the bells and whistles of the new ones. I think that when I bought mine, the only options were color and size.

I had an Aeron, but I recently ditched it. My problem with the Aeron was that I wanted something with some neck and head support, as my working position is as often as not feet up and PowerBook in my lap. The Aeron's replacement is by Recaro, the same company that does sports car seats, racing seats, and airline seats. I presume that, depending on materials choices such a chair may fit into your budget. If they are sold Stateside at least. It is not quite as intuitive to adjust as the Aeron, nor is its solid grey leather back as cooling on hot days when the aircon is kaput. But it is just as supportive and overall for my needs is the superior chair. I like it so much I bought two -- custom-upholstered in pebble-grain black leather with bright orange alcantara inserts -- for our home office. Peace, JG
