Teams scheduling difficult OOC games isn't unique to the SEC and you're citing exceptions more than the rule, (I mean, Oklahoma and FSU played Savannah State on consecutive weekends, Houston played the juggernaut of D-IAA GSU last year.... and let's not forget that one time Michigan scheduled the easy-beat of Appalachian State or when VT played James Madison etc. etc. etc)

Ed, come on, you know better.

The SEC sends 8 teams to bowls every year. They win ~70% of those bowls. That is a sign of depth, at least eight down.

Just FYI: UGA and OSU had a home-and-home scheduled for 2020 and 2021, but OSU backed out after the B1G and Pac-12 came to a scheduling agreement. OSU didn't want to worry about playing a Pac-12 team and UGA in the same season.

Everyone single one would rather be in UGa or Alabama's spot over Florida.

It's funny, Muschamp said exactly this yesterday. Saban made a similar comment to the one I made about a conference championship being a penalty, and Muschamp basically said, "well, Nick, let's switch. We'd be happy to go to Atlanta in your place."

So - here's an interesting link -

http://sportsdelve.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/conference-vs-conference-bowl-records/

Seems the only conference to get the best of the SEC in bowls is the Big East?!!??!?!?!

In response to SH - given the teams available this year, at least 4 SEC teams belong in the top 10.

I'd go very close to the current AP poll: http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings?poll=1

Here's my bottom line:

1> The SEC is by far the strongest conference over the past 10-15 years, especially at the top (#2 or 3 SEC team beats winner of most other conferences as proven in BCS bowls).

2> I don't agree that the SEC is as deep as everyone thinks - yes they send 7 teams to bowls and win 60%, but their bottom teams are playing absolute zeros.. and that means the top 3-4 teams are winning bowls. But they are deep and good.

3> Pre-season rankings are the underlying problem. We should not publish any rankings until week 6.

4> The FBS should mandate more early-season inter conference play - all the big schools should play one home-home with another FBS school each year as a precursor to bowl eligibility.

Those three teams have beat the following:
#2 Alabama
#3 Florida
#5 Georgia
#9 South Carolina
#8 Texas A&M
#11 Clemson
#15 Mississippi State
Nebraska? Their best win is against 8-4 Michigan.
Oklahoma? Their best win is 8-3 Texas.
Florida State? See last Saturday.
Clemson? See last Saturday.
Oregon State? 3 losses. Their best win is 7-5 Wisconsin.

Thanks for making my point! icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

A good number of those wins are West Virginia. I'm guessing a lot of the others are something like SEC #8 against Big East #2.

Seems like a quibble to me if you need to start looking at the relative quality of the bottom couple of teams. The top 8 in the SEC have been better than the top 8 of any other conference for the last ten years or so. That's a lot of good teams, even if the bottom four or so are slightly worse than other conferences (and I don't believe they are appreciably so).

BCS rules state that if a non-AQ team is 16th or higher and ranked higher than an AQ-team, the non-AQ team gets the BCS berth.

Which means Kent State will get an Orange Bowl bid if they win, because teams above them will be off or have lost this weekend. If NIU wins, they have a real longshot chance. There are no Big East teams ranked currently.

If KSU beats FSU, then Jimbo deserves to be fired along with the rest of his staff and the school needs to call Nick Saban, remind him of his wanderlust and ask him to name his price; even though everything I've heard about Kent State says they are a really good squad.

Oh, and a Tech/KSU Orange Bowl isn't an impossibility because Tech could get a BCS waiver though I doubt they will beat FSU or get a waiver if they do.

It's madness. the ACC doesn't deserve an automatic seat with the big boys atm.

Now I am signing off again.

Randomly selected these schools just for shits and giggles about their OOC and to prove thatsoft OOC schedules are NOT the exclusive realm of the SEC (although why this has to be demonstrated, IRDK).

USC--ND which is tradition. For 2012-22 they have... Hawaii, Hawaii, BC, BC, Utah State, Fresno State, 'Cuse, aTm, aTm, Texas, Texas, Tennessee. 7/11 are underwhelming.
Michigan--ND, UMass (a first-year FBS team, playing them this year), Bama, Central Mich, Akron, Conn; App State, Miami OH, Utah; Utah, Oregon State, BYU, UNLV; Hawaii, Colorado , Ball State; Arkansas; Arkansas; Notre Dame. Wow, not even going to touch that schedule.
Oregon--Arkansas State, Fresno State, Tenn Tech; Nicholls State Nevada, Tenn; Wyoming, Michigan State; Eastern Washington @Michigan State, GEORGIA STATE; Wyoming; Bowling Green, aTm; aTm; Ohio State; Ohio State. You've got tOSU and Georgia State as the only two teams you can all but guarantee will be solid opponents and those are like 10 years away.
Oklahoma--UTEP, FAMU, ND; ULM, Tulsa, ND; Tennessee, Tulsa; Tennessee, Tulsa. ND; tOSU; tOSU; LSU, Army; LSU, Army; Nebraska; Nebraska. Again, not an OOC scheudle inspiring much fear.

So basically what I'm saying is from a random sample of four conference leaders, its clear that in the already very limited number of possible OOC Games teams all over teh country from every conference prefer cupcakes.

I'm actually kind of happy for the seniors at Washington State - They've never won an apple cup before tonight.

COUGS! They deserved this one.

They deserve it more than the Big Least, which is not saying much. The Orange Bowl has been unwatchable more often than not of late because of these horrible AQ teams.

I can't remember the last time I was excited to watch the Orange Bowl. They have the worst AQ tie ins with the ACC and Big Least.
