yeah I saw those, but it has been a bit of a trend for a while.

I will say that Bobby Flay's old place, I forget what it was named, was a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Frontera in Chicago and Red O in SoCal (three locations)--while "not real Mexcian food"--are nonetheless all great.

not real Mexican food

I am beginning to think even real Mexicans in Mexico haven't had real Mexican food.

I think a big problem with NY Mexican food is the tortillas. Basically every restaurant buys them, or does a shit job of making them themselves. One of the biggest draws of Tex Mex is how well that food combines with ridiculously fresh lard tortillas. Without that it's kind of pointless.

A place on basically the corner where I live does hand made tortillas. If anybody goes there and says it isn't as good as LA can straight up kiss my ass.

Florintinas or something or another?

All this talk is making me hungry. Need to head down the street to the place that always has this little old Hispanic woman hand tossing balls of dough into the best tortillas that she cooks on this big flat stone topped thing.

But it's not. I would have thought that before spending much time here, too.

NYC has some fine BBQ places. As I said, it is strange that the mexican food does not compare.

Mind you that I work with millions (perhaps billions) of NYC transplants down here, and the feeling is unanimous.

my brother's inlaws (to be) sent me a jar of homemade adobo sauce. Apparently it's made on some molcajete type instrument.

Traditional Mexican, food, tacos, burritos, etc., most certainly is real Mexican food. But Mexican food is much more -- and often much better -- than that. Defining Mexican food as tacos and burritos is like defining Middle Eastern cuisine as falafel and shawarma.

What we need here is a Venn diagram.

i think we can all agree that middle eastern food is pretty much limited to falafel and shawarma. Maybe add hummus and that cucumber yogurt dip.

Excellent. It's almost a crime to stuff a really good, fresh flour tortilla. They should be eating by themselves.
