But it's like having a nice glass of water when you're thirsty - technically you don't need it to go about your day (one can spend a full day without water), but it feels a whole lot better to satiate the thirst (or coffee crave).   And again... I don't see any reason not to.
Coffee addiction is pretty powerful in its effects (the withdrawal symptoms), but easy to break. I do a four-day taper down to zero every year.

I don't know. I don't think it has the same effect on everybody. I can go days without it no problem. Maybe I am feeling those effects and I just assume feeling lousy is from being hungover every morning.

"Am I shaking because of too much coffee, or not enough alcohol?!!?!?"

it's pretty much a cycle of drink alcohol to counteract the coffee I've been drinking all day, and then drink coffee to counteract the alcohol i've been drinking all night.

I go to zero one day a year (probably same as yours...) and can definitely feel it.

Try reducing consumption (including having decaf instead of regular) a few days before. It isn't very hard, but you have to do it. My wife doesn't and the withdrawal headaches are to the point of nausea.
I usually have, between espresso and coffee, four cups a day. So by swapping decaf I go from 4-0 to 3-1 to 2-2 to 1- 3 to 4-0.
Or you can use a caffeine suppository (yes there is a such a thing). This is why it exists. You are welcome.

dopey - how many days w/ each combination? a couple of days each or do you just do a day apiece (so you are down to 0-4 in 4 days)?

I am sure a longer taper is better, but I don;t plan that far in advance so just reduce each day over three or four days.

Rule 31: If you can think of it, there's a suppository of it.

Heard news helicopters, chanting, and honking all night. It was an annoyance.

My friend got some great pictures of the crowds on the Brooklyn Bridge though.

Why not a nonstop stream of Irish coffee?

Caffeine addiction is only aggravating in circumstances where you can't get more caffeine. My regular coffee place must make something pretty intense, because I can have three espressos on my weekends and still get a caffeine headache.
