Big fan of Long Beach. I've been out there three times this year already.

+1 and it's pretty relaxed there too.

I really like the beaches of Fire Island, but it's a pain. Haven't tried Sandy Hook, and it seem easy to get there, but a little pricey via the ferry.
I'll be in Coney Island this Saturday. Wife is there for an open water swim, so I might as well join (not the swim).
Would be at Fire Island more if it was more convenient, but I'm sure that's the case with most people too.

Escaped that for this weekend. That's a win in my book.

I guess I'm the only one who loves getting to Fire Island? Ferry is reasonably close to the city and then the ferry ride, up on the deck is a perfect 30 mns decompression chamber. Everything shifts : from work to play, from stress to relax, from city to beach. I love getting across on that ferry deck.

so i haven't been to Fire Island in 4 years, but I seemed to remember a subway ride (with a transfer) to Penn Station, then LIRR out a bit, and then the Ferry ride over. Kind of a pain.

I always feel like the boat ride is not really part of the journey. Once you arrive at the ferry (and make the boat!) the trip is over. For this reason I always think of FI as being extremely convenient. Sure, you can get stuck in 2+ hours of traffic on a Friday, but that is when you take the train. We go out Saturday mornings - leave the garage by 8:15 and we're at the boat in under an hour - plenty of time to get gas and easily make the 9:30. And as gdl said, the stress starts to melt away as you pull pull out from the dock...nod[1].gif

Going to Fire Island on Sunday. Never been before.

My Fire Island trip plans have been thrown out the window with a wedding I was invited to, thankfully it's up in New Hampshire and it should be gorgeous. I also will enjoy the drive, assuming I avoid traffic for the bit I'm on 95...

On my wife's only trip to FI within minutes of disembarking she came across a picture of a 10" dick and a phone number stuck to a telephone pole. Have things changed much?

On a similar note, how is it I just found out that Ed Koch was gay?

Sorry, I should have been more discrete.

I've lived here all my life and I just found out he was gay a few years back.

Should have emptied your mailbox, dude. She tried the number all weekend.

I went to an auction of his furnishings a few months ago and it did cross my mind that some of it was a touch delicate.

There's a limo company that runs shuttles straight between ferry dock and the UES. 8 seater vans. So easy and you don't have to deal with the shite that LIRR is on weekends
