I find NYC Chinese food to be not all that. The good places are the white tablecoth places like Shun Lee and Mr. K's, but they are expensive. There was an awesome Chinatown dive called Canton (on the dirtiest block in the city) that was fantastic and dirt cheap but it closed. No idea why, it was always packed. Lycee House is not bad and quite a bit cheaper than Shun Lee. I never go to C-Town any more.
Up where I am in W'Chester there was a fantastic place called Hunan Village that was sold, went downhill, then the original owner bought it back, "re-imagined" it, but it's just not good any more (and it's still very expensive). Then we had a great dim sum shop in our village which was fantastic but closed within like three months. Then it reopened, again as a dim sum shop, but with a different name and new decor, but now it sucks.
