False - generalization. Covering only your ears might be nearly pointless if your objective is to maintain body heat. But it is not pointless if you're just fine on body heat, and you don't want to freeze your ears (which get cold quick due to an extreme surface area:mass ratio), and deal with the associated pain.
It's a prefectly legit stepping stone between no head cover and full head cover.
