One, I can't afford Manhattan, two, I did not miss last night's train, they kicked us all off because of some mechanical problem.
I hear you. And I know living here does not eliminate this kind of thing: running a bt behind schedule myself the other morning I heard a train coming into the station so I hustled down the stairs w/ my metrocard at the ready. Swiped and rammed my groin into an unyielding turnstyle. Moved down the line form turnstyle to turnstyle all w/ the same result. I staggered back as the train pulled out and saw that every single turnstyle had a red 'no cards/no takens' sign, but the ememrgency exit door had been roped open...
wait, why don't you guys drive? Traffic can't be that bad in the city.
it's usually much faster to get around via train. And when traffic is gone, driving can still be a harrowing experience with the awful cab drivers who will not hesitate to run you off the road. And parking garages are about $500 a month.
I forgot the best part. Of course, whenever there is rain in New York, puddles the size of the Great Lakes form at every intersection. As I was foolishly standing there trying to get a cab, one went by at mach 10 right through Lake Superior, kicked up a tidal wave that drenched me from head to toe. Just like a scene from a WC Fields movie!
Oh, glorious Gotham!
Wait!!!! How long have you lived here?? You don't know to watch out for that??? Edited by ter1413 - 9/20/12 at 4:08pm
I hate NYC as much as the next guy (probably more than the next guy as I think about it), but sounds to me like there is something else going on in Manton's life.

I'd bet he misses California terribly right about now.
(and yes, I know the traffic is bad in NYC, I giggled as I typed it.)
Took a visiting cousin of mine who lives in some fancy tall Chelsea/Flatiron building to lunch today. He was complaining about the lack of good Japanese food so I took him to Hannosuke and after the first bite of scallop tempura I thought he was going to cry.
