todd barry is probably in the top 5 of stand ups today who's comedy translates beautifully to audio only form. I think brian regan is the best in that regard, but its almost harder for me to appreciate todd barry watching his video specials compared to when you listen to him in the car/iPod/radio.

Who do I have to know to get in when the shit does down? Or is it like The Shelter episode of The Twilight Zone?

The NYC buildings I grew up in had these. They were just big, safe concrete spaces that were expected to remain standing and would be a place to go-the equivalent of door frames in an earthquake. I think they were in the interior stairwells and back basement (i.e. above ground). They were never stocked with anything.

They're decommissioned and probably rented out as basement apts now, but I like to think one or two are still ready to go.

I realized that I'm pretty much fucked for getting off the island if things get bad. My car is kept in a garage with an elevator so if the power is cut I'm hoofing it. If the bridges go out I could swim to the Bronx, but why would I do that? Not sure I could swim across the Hudson. Maybe I should pick up an inflatable raft or large glider to launch from my roof.

Randomly, Sandy made me realize that we'd all be well and truly fucked if there was ever a serious disaster here.

you'd still have to stow the glider/zodiac boat/other modes of escape into a storage facility.

Have a large private roof, so could store, build, defend and launch from there, May need a giant rubber band to launch.

Royally fucked. I could hold out at my cabin for a long time but that's useless if I can't get there. Then again, The Warriors managed to bop their way from Central Park to Coney in one night so maybe there's hope.

this was a mean-spirited zinger that I said a few weeks ago. I meant it in theory, but I was obviously way harsh so I could maintain my internet tough guy status:

Why did no one take their $400 hatchet with hand-painted handle to it in a rage? Would have made for some awesome sustainably harvested kindling.

I will say that this was the place where I ate one rainy day with my girlfriend and the hostess gave me major shit because I refused to put my umbrella in their bin by the door and I wanted to take it with me to my seat. Now after seeing this I don't feel so bad. That restaurant is awesome, btw.
