In my building there is space for people's bikes.

there's space in my building too. i've had a bike every city i lived in before but was just scared about NY for some reason.
figured i would give this a shot for a year. i like the idea of one-way trips to a bar or whatever and not having to drunk cycle home.

The beauty of a Citibike is that it is "love it and leave it." No need to worry about what you will do with it that evening. After a half hour, you are done and move on. If you want to use it again that evening, you can, but you don't have to.

I have a Bixi in Montreal (The original Citi, I think). It's a bike friendly city, so it's great. It's heavy, cumbersome, and is a pain on hills. But I can drop it anywhere, and not have to worry about theft, vandalism, repairs, upkeep, or anything of that nature. That is a fantastic burden to relieve.

Damn. I'm convinced, Manton. NY does suck.

Given the enthusiasm for bicycle sharing, I'm surprised that folding bikes aren't more popular in cities. They have major advantages for urban commuters over both full-frame bicycles (can be carried inside to prevent theft, don't take up a lot of space in the office or home) and shared bikes (no 45-minute time limit, no need to find a station to pick up/drop off, faster and lighter). They're the best of both worlds.

And everyone on a regular or Citi bike looks so cool?

I saw a guy riding a citibike today, steering with one hand and holding an umbrella aloft with the other. Looked great in a Mary Poppins kind of way.

That was probably pB's umbrella being delivered. No wonder it took so long.

this is a head scratcher to me. Yeah, people who ride bikes on the sidewalk are total assholes, and I want to deflate their tires, but I don't fear them. I fear speeding drivers who try to beat red lights that actually turned red 3 seconds ago and pedestrians are now crossing.

I guess it's just way easier to sit on a street corner, look at the sidewalk, and then as soon as that bike enters the pedestrian area it's lights out than to worry about speeders.

If ever there was a day for a good Manton gripe about the disgusting summer heat and humidity, today would be it.

My pents look like I jumped in a pool.

if you really want to get angry/depressed, go to accuweather and click through the next several weeks' worth of long range forecasts ... there is no end in sight, no break ...

Manton would complain about the fall leaves being too crisp when stepped on.
