It was easy to break into the conductor cabs in those red birds-turn the knob a bit a kick the door. We used to gain access and make announcements over the PA system. Fun times.

Nah, not enough balls for that. That movie (the original based on the 6 line) made me weary of trains for a while. I think I read somewhere that one guy did take an A train for the length of the route some time ago, though.

Yeah, it was around 1999, I was here at the time. It was actually a HS kid who was obsessed with trains, he learned how to operate them and then took one out and ran the route, making the stops and everything. It was wild.

I'm gonna have to look this up.

OK I searched and only found stories on Darius McCollum who once took a E train but I think the dude you're talking about is the one I'm talking about but I can't find the story. The story on Darius is a sad one, tho.

EDIT2: This was bugging me so I kept at it. The kids name was Keron Thomas and he was 16. It's crazy how you can just waltz in a sign out a train.

I found this NYTimes article from 2009.

When I read in that piece that only 17 percent of Manhattan households have children, I wondered about SF. Looked it up, and 17.7 percent. That explains a lot about the state of the school system.

Makes sense. I would never want to have children in this town, at least not unless I was making several multiples of what I am now...

Not surprised about SF, but surprised about Manhattan. First, remember that at least a fourth of Manhattan is not yuppie, it's predominantly poor and non-white. There are kids in those parts. Second, I can't be the only one who's noticed a real "baby boom" in white Manhattan. The UES and certain areas downtown seem to have kids everywhere/

I've always gathered that people who are not NYC residents assume that raising a family in NYC means raising a family in a midtown skyscraper.
