shortening sleeves with working buttons

  Hi i have a slim fit suit that i bought on a trip to Italy i really like the way it fits but i have a problem,

the sleeves are big about 3 inch , what can i do to shorten the sleeves with working buttons ,

i think 3 inches is to much to take from the shoulder and if i take 3 inches from the bottom of the

sleeves i would have to move the 2 first buttons up and the 3 button would be the first but probably

with no space between the button and the end of the sleeve, what do you guys think is the best aproach to

try to fix this problem, thanks.

Take it to a very good tailor, preferably one who does bespoke suits (not a seamstress or dry cleaner)
and ask if anything can be done. Taking three inches from the shoulder may not necessarily be
impossible in all cases.

3 inches is a shitload.

I have a few suits with working buttonholes, and I just have the tailor take as much off the bottom of the sleeve as possible without putting the lowest button right at the edge. (about 1/2")

3 inches...yeah, bummer.

My tailor has a $100 solution to this. He calls it "the cut job" and it's only recommended for sport coats, because there's a noticeable section cut around the buttons. Let me know if you'd like to see pictures.

Depending on your tailor, it may be possible to shorten the sleeves at the shoulder. ie. where the sleeves attach to the jacket/coat at the shoulder-armpit seam.

with 3 inches to remove, he will probably have to mess with the sleeve also on top of having to reset the shoulder

My tailor, TopShelf in Minneapolis, also offers the "cut job" which I elected to pursue when I bought a Zegna SC off here that was incorrectly measured and was 2" too long on working button holes (which were poorly done by the original owner too)

 

Only use this option as a last resort but on an SC its not the end of the world for an otherwise good jacket.

BrBritish Custom Tailors in Louisville, Kentucky will sew the button holes by hand after doing the alterations. It is somewhat costly, but makes the most sense if having working buttons is important to you. Personaaly, I think it's an affectation.

Thats great, but given the button distance, you will have a button at the very bottom of the sleeve.

It would take a really skilled tailor to shorten it without disturbing the design/buttoning of the sleeves.
