As a Londoner, I'm fairly impartial in this one, but Paul Ryan got a bit of stick from Hadley Freeman in her column in The Guardian today.

Right enough, his suits are bloody awful.

Yes, her article was a fair and unbiased deconstruction of his clothing choices, rather than a foil for a political diatribe.

Unsurprising, given that The Guardian's editorial stance is significantly to the left of liberal US Democrats.

Not bringing politics into this, of course.

I am guessing that Romney does not buy off the rack but is careful not to be too well-fitted.

This would be my guess as well.

As to the picture, Mitt could wear a worse cut suit than the one in that photo. Shoulder looks clean and it has good shape. The gorge is a bit low, and the collar is a bit pointed, but that's rather indicative of the time. Something needs to be done about that pocket square, but other wise a decent job of looking better than everyone else in the photo.

As a slight Presidential diversion...

Holy cow! Began watching the old 'West Wing' series recently on Roku... lots of suits on there are just swallowing those guys. (Rob Lowe the obvious exception) The President wore a suit last night (one of very first episodes) that had more gapping than I thought was humanly possible... I mean, that coat collar was like 2" off of his shirt!

I know. The politicos are dressed terribly in 24 as well - e.g. President Keeler.

I notice this more since I joined the forum - when I first watched West Wing many years ago, I noticed completely different things (i.e. the 'uniform' of the American politician: the dark sober colours, Repp striped ties, etc.). Josh's suits always looked like he had been dragged through a hedge backwards (although I understand that's fairly accurate!).

Speaking as someone who has to work hard to maintain their weight, I still am absolutely shocked at how someone so in the public eye and scrutinized can appear in public looking like this:

700

Who wants to bet me $5 that Romney wears a blue suit, white shirt and red tie to accept his nomination? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Looks like Ryan has switched over to Windsor knots. and rather recently...I wonder who advised him in that direction?

Anything wrong with his looks besides he's obese?

Exactly. He is half Sicilian and has that Italian side that is inclined to the bigger bloke. You can't fight blood. Trouble is it could cut your life short just when you are hitting your stride.
