Where to buy tweed in the US?

My best friend is getting married in December. He and his fiancee want to keep it a relatively casual affair, so in lieu of tuxes, he suggested the idea of having a gray/charcoal suit instead. Not a bad plan, if you ask me, as one is much more likely to get some mileage out of a suit. Since I'm the best man, he's put me in charge of scouting these things. We live in Atlanta, GA. Where on earth would one begin such a search? I figured J Crew would be a decent place to check, and probably budget friendly at that, but suppose we don't find what he wants there. Where would you go?

How many groomsmen are there? Are they all going to wear the exact same suit? If so, what range of ages/shapes will wear it?

A Ludlow suit with a nipped-in waist and ultra-thin lapel is not going to flatter a 52-year old man with a 42" beer belly. Without more information it's hard to suggest accurate sources.

Good questions. They've got the good sense, in a small wedding, not to have the whole cavalry at the altar. Just bride, groom, maid of honor, and best man. He's 26, relatively trim, well proportioned. I'm 26, a touch shorter, more athletic of frame, still rather slim.

J Crew ludlow in tweed would do you both pretty well - I second that first notion. Side note, you can order Harris tweed directly from overseas if you do a quick google (and if you like Harris tweed).

Ordering the fabric is an interesting idea, though MTM might be out of budget. Not 100% sure, but most likely.

Sorry. I should have clarified, you can order Harris tweed jackets, ready to wear, online from their direct mill sales - not just the fabric. They have a number of garments in different shades, patterns, cuts, buttons, etc. If you're interested and can't find a good link let me know and I'll try to source it. It's definitely worth a look, and if I remember correctly is on par with J Crew's prices and you get the real deal Harris certified tweed.

After some searching, I see what you mean. Appreciate the idea. I'm hoping that we can get lucky in finding something locally that will work instead of ordering. Always best to see it in person, but good to know this is an option.

Understandable. I've seen the J Crew ludlow in person, and it's pretty solid. Definitely worth checking out. In fact, if it goes on sale at the end of the season I'll probably pick it up - it's that worthwhile. I think that's where you'll get lucky.
